GEO

Get cited by the models people now ask.

A growing share of buying research never reaches a results page. Someone asks an assistant for the best option in their city, and the model answers with three names. GEO is the work of making sure yours is one of them, and that what the model says about you is accurate.

The principle

What is generative engine optimisation (GEO)?

Optimise how your brand is understood, surfaced and recommended inside AI-generated answers.

Generative engine optimisation, or GEO, is the practice of increasing how often a brand is surfaced, recommended and cited inside AI-generated answers from systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. Unlike traditional SEO, which competes for a ranked position on a results page, GEO competes for inclusion in a synthesised answer, which depends on how consistently and clearly a brand is described across the sources those models draw on.

How GEO works
01

Be discoverable

Make the brand easy for AI systems to find across relevant sources.

02

Build authority

Create useful, credible information that reinforces what the brand represents.

03

Stay consistent

Keep names, facts, services and positioning aligned across important sources.

04

Earn inclusion

Increase the chances of being surfaced, recommended or cited in generated answers.

SEO helps you compete for a position. GEO helps make your brand part of the answer itself.

Model visibility baseline

We test how the major assistants currently answer the questions your buyers ask, record which brands they name and which sources they cite, and turn that into a measurable starting position.

Entity clarity

Models reason about entities, not keywords. We make sure your organisation, services, locations and people are described consistently everywhere they appear, so the model has one coherent picture to draw on.

Source placement

Identifying the specific directories, publications, comparison sites and communities that the models actually cite in your category, then earning accurate presence on them.

Crawler access

Deliberate decisions about GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and the rest, so the pages you want cited are readable and the ones you do not are not.

Retrievable content

Restructuring key pages into self-contained, quotable passages with clear claims and stated sourcing, which is the format synthesis engines prefer to lift.

Drift monitoring

Assistants change their answers. We re-run the query set monthly and flag when a model starts describing you inaccurately or drops you from a recommendation.

How it runs

Four stages, in order.

01

Query set

We build the list of prompts your buyers genuinely use, in their words, across the research and shortlist stages.

02

Measure the current answer

Each prompt is run against the major assistants and logged: who was named, what was cited, what was said about you.

03

Close the source gaps

Work is prioritised by which missing or inaccurate sources are doing the most damage to the synthesised answer.

04

Re-measure

The same query set is re-run monthly, so share of answer is tracked as a trend rather than claimed as an outcome.

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?

SEO competes for a ranked position on a search results page, where the user then chooses a link. GEO competes for inclusion inside a generated answer, where the model chooses for the user. SEO is largely about a single site's pages; GEO depends heavily on what third-party sources say about you, because that is what the model synthesises from.

Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend us?

No. Model outputs are probabilistic and change between versions without notice. What we can do is measure how you are currently described, close the gaps in the sources those models rely on, and track the trend honestly over time.

Should we block AI crawlers?

It depends on your business. If discovery matters more than content protection, blocking GPTBot or Google-Extended removes you from the answers your buyers see. If your content is the product, restriction may be correct. We help you make it a deliberate decision rather than a default.

Is GEO worth investing in yet?

If your buyers research before they contact you, yes. Assistant-led research is already a meaningful share of discovery in most considered-purchase categories, and the sources models trust take months to influence, so starting late is expensive.
